Quick update: I inserted an invisible zipper!

Kind reader Sheri reminded me of an excellent invisible zipper tutorial, so I decided to rip out the dress's zipper and try re-inserting it using an invisible zipper foot. I was worried that I wouldn't be able to because all of tutorials I've seen indicate that an invisible zipper should be inserted before the seams are sewn.

Despite that the dress was already constructed, the zipper went in relatively easily. It looks soooo much better.  No zipper tape to be seen, and only the little zipper pull is visible at the top.

So even when a dress calls for a regular zipper with topstitching (as this one did), I still think I'll try to insert an invisible zipper, but before the skirt lining is sewn in.

Wow! What an improvement! You did a great job. As you become more comfortable with garment sewing, you will become more intuitive about the construction steps. You will probably need to refer less to the directions and even come up with better construction ideas on your own. You read about it all the time on patternreview.com . A great learning magazine is Threads. Maybe you have access to a library that has old copies. I've been sewing a long time, but I still learn lots of new techniques with this magazine. I make a lot of shift dresses with the zipper down the back. A Threads article described a fast and easy techinique for lining this type of dress. Plus there is a section each month with great sewing tips.

Good job! I almost always use an invisible zipper in skirts and dresses regardless of what the instructions say.
